 1) Bankimcandra, eigentlich B. Cattopadhyaya [tʃatopa'djaːja], bengalischer Schriftsteller, * Khantalpara (Bengalen) 27. 6. 1838, ✝ Kalkutta 8. 4. 1894; führte die westliche Gattung des Romans in die Bengaliliteratur ein. Beeinflusst von Walter Scott, verfasste er historische Romane mit patriotischer Tendenz; außerdem schrieb er sozialkritische Werke.
 
Werke: (Bengali): Kopalkundala (1866; deutsch); Vishavriksha (1873; englisch The poison tree); Krishnakanter uil (1878; englisch Krishnakanta's will); Anandamath (1882; englisch The abbey of bliss).
 
 2) Sharatcandra, eigentlich S. Cattopadhyaya [tʃatopa 'djaːja], bengalischer Schriftsteller, * Debanandapur (bei Kalkutta) 15. 9. 1876, ✝ Kalkutta 16. 1. 1938. In Sprache und Stil von R. Tagore beeinflusst, behandelte Chatterjee in seiner erzählenden Prosa soziale Probleme der indischen Mittelklasse und kämpfte besonders gegen die Diskriminierung der Frauen in der Hindugesellschaft. Die starke Gefühlsbetontheit, die gelegentlich an Sentimentalität grenzt, machten ihn zu einem der beliebtesten Schriftsteller Indiens im 20. Jahrhundert.
